What’s Up With K-Pop?
BTS, BLACKPINK, NCT, G-DRAGON, you name it! K-Pop’s been around for quite a long time, and it is now a global phenomenon thanks to its catchy melodies, dances and stunning visuals.
General K-Wave
The Korean Wave (한류 (Hallyu); [한] ‘han’ meaning Korean and [류] ‘ryu’ meaning wave/flow) referring to the expanding Korean culture.
Modern K-Pop dated back to the 1990s when a group of three called Seo Taiji and Boys debuted. They incorporated English in their lyrics and dance moves as a part of their music.
Why is K-Pop Popular?
Groups such as BTS and BLACKPINK are not strangers anymore to people around the world. They are continuously making achievements that are beyond amazing, like BTS being the first K-Pop group to ever be nominated for and win a Billboard Music Award, BLACKPINK being the first female K-Pop group to perform at Coachella, and many other achievements.
It all narrows down to one single question,
Why is K-Pop popular?
I asked my friends their opinion on why the music genre is so popular. This is what they have to say about it,
- K-Pop songs have very catchy melodies, and it’s always very addicting
- Some K-Pop singers have songs that raises awareness about issues happening in our surroundings, such as mental health issues and even talking about nature
- K-Pop lyrics have very deep meanings, and it touches the heart of the listeners
- K-Pop is aesthetically pleasing… Their choreographies, concept and music videos are to die for!
- The singers encourage us to do better things for themselves and their surroundings!
- K-Pop singers indirectly saved the lives of many through their lyrics, and inspires many to do better things in life or simply not give up
